A model of health care delivery for paediatric HIV/AIDS has been developed in ward G25 at Groote Schuur Hospital. This model emphasises continuity of care and a comprehensive, holistic in- and out-patient service for HIV-infected children. This model provides a 24 hour 'walk-in' facility, a 'no wrong days' policy for out-patients and a conscious effort to be positive in the care of children with HIV/AIDS.
Ward G25 has been used as a 'window' on HIV/AIDS in children, to demonstrate its value in respect of the morale of families and health care staff alike. Our visitors have included health care workers from France, the United States, Britain the Netherlands and Belgium, and from regions in South Africa (Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal) where no such model exists. The activities of the service have been presented to service organisations, schools and community interest groups. Other visitors to the ward have included potential corporate donors, not necessary with the purpose of obtaining a donation to Kidzpositive, but rather to present them with facts about affected children and families and an opportunity to decide on how they would best like to contribute to efforts to alleviate the burden of HIV/AIDS.
